5th May 2017
Lawrence graduated from Bird College in the last few weeks and his college credits include Joe Boyd/Hardy in Damn Yankees and Leo Frank in Parade.
This Summer one of the most celebrated musical scores of all time comes steaming back into town as the Union Theatre proudly presents Irving Berlin’s Annie Get Your Gun. Featuring classic songs such as “I Got Lost in His Arms”, “They say it’s Wonderful”, “I Got the Sun in the Morning” and of course “There’s No Business like Show Business”, this newly imagined production will be directed by Kirk Jameson and play for a strictly limited run only.
With Music and Lyrics by Irving Berlin and a Book by Dorothy Fields, Annie Get Your Gun first opened on Broadway in 1946 starring Ethel Merman. The idea for the musical initially came to book writer Fields who wanted to write a show about real life sharp shooter Annie Oakley and her romance with Frank Butler. The project was produced by Broadway legends Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein, who had the idea to partner Fields with Irving Berlin. Despite having never written a musical before, Berlin was responsible for some of the most popular songs in the American Songbook at the time including “What’ll I Do?”, “Always” and “Puttin’ on the Ritz” and within days of working on the show, had written its biggest hit “There’s No Business Like Show Business”. The show opened to rave reviews and ran for over three years on Broadway, before transferring to London’s West End and Australia. Since then the musical has spawned a movie and a TV version and countless revivals all around the world, most notably the 1999 Broadway revival starring Bernadette Peters and the 2009 London production starring Jane Horrocks.
